Cognitive Dissonance: When Our Minds Resist New Possibilities In Autism

When a new perspective challenges beliefs we've held for years, our brains often prioritize protecting those beliefs over exploring new possibilities. Psychologists call this cognitive dissonance. Cognitive Dissonance Theory was first introduced by psychologist Leon Festinger in the late 1950s.


The theory explains how individuals experience discomfort when their thoughts, beliefs, or behaviors are inconsistent. Imagine a parent who has long understood their child's autism as being entirely genetic and therefore completely fixed. If they encounter evidence suggesting that development is more complex and may involve interactions between genetics and other biological or environmental factors, they may experience psychological discomfort. One way the mind can reduce that discomfort is by doubling down on the original belief and dismissing the new information, rather than considering whether their understanding could expand. Psychologists describe this pattern as motivated reasoning, and over time it can become belief perseverance. Cognitive dissonance is not a sign of weakness, nor is it unique to one perspective. It is a normal part of being human. The question isn't whether we experience it, the question is whether we are willing to recognize it in ourselves. When cognitive dissonance goes unrecognized, it can become a barrier to exploring new possibilities in autism. In the context of autism, recognizing these psychological patterns reminds us that the goal is  to remain open to understanding and exploring every evidence-informed opportunity that may help an individual reach their fullest potential.


How Cognitive Dissonance Can Influence Autism Discussions


Autism is one of the most complex and emotionally significant topics many families will ever navigate. It involves deep personal experiences, difficult decisions, evolving scientific research, and a desire to do what is best for your child. Due to the mental pressure of navigating Autism most discussions are closely tied to our beliefs, values, and identities. When our understanding of autism becomes rooted in a single explanation, it can become difficult to consider information that introduces additional complexity. 

One example of this is genetic determinism. Genetic determinism is the belief that genetics alone determine outcomes and that autism is therefore entirely fixed and unchangeable. Genetics undoubtedly play an important role in autism; however, modern research increasingly recognizes that human development is multifactorial. Genetics interact with countless biological and developmental processes, and researchers continue to study how these interactions influence development over time. Recognizing this complexity does not diminish the importance of genetics; it acknowledges that biology is rarely explained by a single factor. The challenge arises when certainty about one explanation closes the door to considering additional evidence or alternative perspectives. Once a belief becomes closely connected to our understanding of autism, questioning that belief can feel uncomfortable. 

For some individuals, considering a more multifactorial model may raise emotionally difficult questions. It may prompt reflection on past decisions, uncertainty about whether different choices might have led to different outcomes, or concern that opportunities for intervention could have been overlooked. Whether or not those concerns are ultimately justified, psychology suggests that emotionally significant questions can make people more likely to defend existing beliefs rather than reconsider them. This is one way cognitive dissonance may contribute to motivated reasoning and belief perseverance.


Why This Matters


The way we think influences the way we act. If we believe nothing meaningful can influence development, we may be less likely to explore therapies, lifestyle changes, educational supports, or emerging research that could improve communication, independence, health, or quality of life. This mindset is sometimes described as therapeutic nihilism which is the belief that meaningful improvement is unlikely; making exploration of supportive interventions seem unnecessary. Remaining open to possibilities does not mean accepting every new theory or intervention without question. It means recognizing that certainty should never replace curiosity and that scientific understanding continues to evolve.


       Moving Beyond Cognitive Dissonance


Recognizing cognitive dissonance is the first step toward overcoming it. While none of us can eliminate our natural biases, we can become more aware of how they influence our thinking. When faced with information that challenges long-held beliefs, consider asking yourself:

  • Am I evaluating this information objectively, or am I defending a conclusion I've already reached?

  • What evidence supports my current perspective?

  • What evidence challenges it?

  • Am I open to learning something new, even if it makes me uncomfortable?

  • Could there be more than one contributing factor?

These questions are not about proving ourselves wrong. They are about remaining intellectually curious and allowing evidence to guide our thinking. Progress has rarely come from assuming we already have all the answers. Instead, it has come from asking better questions, testing assumptions, and remaining willing to revise our understanding. Autism deserves that same mindset. Recognizing cognitive dissonance does not tell us what to believe about autism. It reminds us to approach the topic with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to explore the full picture.
